Christian Sherwin, a graduating senior at Hightstown High School, has been named one of 689 semifinalists in the 2016 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.
The semifinalists were selected from nearly 4,700 candidates expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in 2016.
Inclusion in the program, now in its 52nd year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating seniors. Scholars are tested on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities.
A panel of educators reviewed the submissions and selected the 689 finalists. The Commission on Presidential Scholars, a group of up to 32 citizens appointed by the president, will now select the finalists. The U.S. Department of Education will announce the scholars in May.
Those scholars will be invited to Washington, D.C. for several days in June to receive the Presidential Scholars Medallion at a recognition ceremony and to participate in events and activities.
