Scholastic sports are in full bloom as the spring season has turned to May. Here is a look at some local athletes who delivered sparkling performances this past week.
Christian Brothers Academy’s Chris Gotterup followed up his record-setting 66 at the Monmouth County Golf Tournament with another outstanding under-par round at the Shore Conference Championships.
The Colt carded a three-under par 69 on the par-72 Charleston Springs Golf Course in Millstone Township to add the SCT crown to his county trophy case. He was the only golfer under par and won the championship by three strokes.
Led by Gotterup, CBA successfully defended its team championship.
Jackson Liberty High School pitcher Meghan Conroy allowed no earned runs and just six hits in leading the Lions to a 4-1 upset of the state’s top-ranked softball team, St. John Vianney. It was the Lancers’ first loss of the season.
Conroy also went 1-3 and scored a run in the upset.
Faith Weber pitched five scoreless innings and belted two home runs as New Egypt High School softball team defeated Delran, 11-0, in the Burlington County Scholastic League Tournament Round of 16.
Weber struck out 10 in her five-inning outing. She was 2-4 with five RBI. Her teammate Meagan Smith was also 2-4 with a home run and two RBI along with picking up her 100th career base hit.
Riley Kernan pitched a four-hitter and was 3-4 with at RBI as Middletown North High School defeated rival Middletown South, 8-1, to all but clinch the Shore Conference A North Division championship outright. The Lions now hold a two-game lead on the Eagles with just two games left in division play.
Keyport High School’s Steve Chandler went 3-3 with two doubles, two RBI and two stolen bases when the Red Raiders defeated the Ranney School, 11-5. Chandler also pitched two-thirds of an inning in relief, allowing no runs and striking out one.
Zachary Marzano struck out 10 and allowed just four hits in tossing a complete game shut out for the J.P. Stevens baseball team in its 1-0 triumph over Sayreville.
Sayreville’s Connor Johnson pitched a two-hitter in the loss as the game turned into a pitcher’s dual with the only run of the game scoring on a RBI ground out by Alexi Zilli in the second inning.
East Brunswick High School girls’ lacrosse goalie Tori Luy stopped 28 shots when the Bears defeated South Plainfield, 16-7.
Luy’s 28 saves are among the highest in the state this spring for a single game..
At the Lion Invitational track and field meet at Middletown North High School, Matawan sprinter Thomas Kalieta won both the 200-(21.85) and 400-meter (48.62) dashes.
Red Bank Regional’s Lauren Sapone (4:59.92) and Howell’s Niamh Hayes (11:07.59) ran season leading times in winning their respect 1,600- and 3,200-meter races at the Mustang Invitational held at John F. Kennedy Memorial High School in Iselin.
