Freehold Township High School’s Bobby Weise and Freehold High School’s Lewis Wright were fit to be tied.
The golfers from rival schools tied for fifth place at the Shore Conference Tournament April 27 at the Charleston Springs Golf Course in Millstone Township. The competition was held on the par-72 South Course.
Weise and Wright both carded 3-over-par 75s.
Just one stroke back and tying for seventh with a 76 was Howell High School’s Mike Stefanelli.
Manalapan High School’s Dan Natoli tied for 21st with an 81.
Howell was the only team to qualify for the Shore Conference Tournament team competition, and the Rebels finished ninth with a team score of 340.
Chris Gotterup of Christian Brothers Academy (CBA), who won the Monmouth County championship with a 6-under 66 at Howell Park, was under par again, firing a 69 that left him three strokes clear of the field.
CBA won the team championship by 16 strokes with a score of 297 — one better than the Colts’ win at the county championship.
The focus for area golfers now moves to the NJSIAA Sectionals May 12. The Central/South Jersey, Group IV sectional is at the Linwood Country Club. The top five individuals will move on to the Tournament of Champions at the Hopewell Valley Golf Club in Hopewell May 22.
Last year, Weise, a junior, finished second at the Central/South Jersey sectional and went on to place third in Group IV and eighth at the Tournament of Champions.
