A golf championship was decided in a tiebreaker to highlight what was another thrilling weekend of local scholastic sports.

Sayreville High School’s Erin McQuade captured the Greater Middlesex Conference Girls’ Golf Tournament championship in a match-of-cards tiebreaker.

McQuade and East Brunswick’s Sayaka Carpenter each carded a 39 for the nine-hole tournament on the par-35 Concordia Golf Course in Monroe Township. The tiebreaker —match of cards—was the second hole on the course, and because she had birdied it, the GMC title went to the Bomber. She is believed to be the school’s first conference champion.

All was not lost for Carpenter. East Brunswick won the team championship.

Christian Brothers Academy’s Will Lutkewitte had the best discus (153-10) and shot put (54-6 1/2) throws at the Monmouth County Relays, leading the Colts to win in both relay events. Those winning efforts wins helped CBA wrack up another county championship.

Red Bank Catholic claimed the girls’ title at the county relays.

Jenna Reid of Middletown North High School ran the fastest 400-meter intermediate hurdles race (1:05.00) at the Monmouth County Relays when she guided her team to the victory in that relay. The sprinter/hurdler also ran on the school’s victorious sprint medley relay team.

Mike Colicchia scored with just 1:18 remaining in the first overtime period to lift Freehold Township High School’s boys’ lacrosse team to a 9-8 victory over Toms River North in the first round of the Shore Conference Tournament.

The Patriots are the No. 6 seed and Toms River North was the 11th.

Colicchia had two goals and as assist in the triumph.

Robbie Garavente scored three goals and assisted on three more as top-seed Rumson-Fair Haven began defense of its SCT boys’ lacrosse title with a 16-2 victory over Point Pleasant Boro.

Cai Martin scored the game-winning goal with just six seconds remaining in regulation to lift the No. 11 seed,  Freehold Township, to an upset of No. 6 Ocean Township, 11-10, in the first round of the Shore Conference Girls’ Lacrosse Tournament.

The Patriots trailed the Spartans, 8-3, at halftime but, outscored Ocean, 8-2, in the second half to steal the victory. Martin scored three goals.

 

Red Bank Catholic’s Cameron Lynch had five goals and four assists as the third-seeded Caseys defeated Manalapn, the 14th seed, 22-8, in the first round of the Shore Conference Girls’ Lacrosse Tournament.

 

Sayreville High School’s Connor Johnson pitched a three-hit shut out as the Bombers beat Edison, 1-0, in Greaer Middlesex Conference baseball action. Johnson fanned 10 in his complete game victory.

 

Ralph Gambino of Freehold Township went the distance allowing just two hits leading the Patriots to a 2-0 victory over their cross-town rival, Freehold High School. The junior struck out three.

 

Alexa Raba threw a complete-game two-hit shut out as Spotswood edged Woodbridge, 2-0, in a GMC softball game.

 

East Brunswick’s Kaleigh Dwyer blasted a two-run home run and pitched a five-hitter as the Bears defeated Middletown North, 8-3, in a big non-conference game pitting East Brunswick of the GMC and Middletown North from the Shore Conference. Dwyer ended with two hits in three at-bats.
