Real estate developers have made inquiries of the municipal planning department about the zoning for land that the Princeton Theological Seminary owns on Stockton Street, the town said last week.
It was not immediately clear what the seminary has in mind for its Tennent campus, home to two residential buildings, or if the land is up for sale. Tennent Hall, with 13 apartments, is located off Hibben Road at the corner of Stockton Street.
Municipal planning director Lee O. Solow said Friday that developers had been in touch with him a few months ago. He said he did not remember which developers, but he said he told them that the property is zoned for educational use.
Mr. Solow said no one from the seminary had been in touch with him.
In a statement released last week, the seminary provided few details about its intentions for the property.
“The Seminary is in the process of developing a campus master plan, which includes considering various options for its Stockton Street site,” the statement said. “We are in communication with the mayor and other town officials as we explore this possibility.”
Mayor Liz Lempert did not return phone calls seeking comment.
Founded in 1812, the seminary now has an enrollment of 556 students, 39 full-time faculty and 23 adjunct faculty, according to its website. It is an institution of the Presbyterian Church (USA).
