Ruth Shankman Schnur

PRINCETON… Ruth Shankman Schnur passed away on May 13, 2016, at age 97, in her own home, surrounded by loving family and her loving aide, Khadijah Jada Robinson. She was 97 years old.
Ruth was born at Mercer Hospital in Trenton, NJ, in 1918. She lived at 731 West State Street, where she married and raised her children, from her birth until 1985. Her father, Simon Shankman, was a merchant at 175 South Broad Street. Her mother, Mary Robinson Shankman, managed that family business, Simon Shankman Fine Mens’ Clothiers, after Simon’s death.
Ruth is a graduate of Elmira College and attended Columbia University School of Social Work. She was active in many religious and civic organizations, including the Trenton Public Library, Womanspace, Abrams Hebrew Academy (formerly Dr. Herzl Zion Hebrew Academy), and Adath Israel Congregation.
Ruth will be remembered as a party lover, a woman with strong opinions and deeply lived values, and an unfailingly present matriarch. Charitable giving was a core part of her life.
Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Bernard M. Schnur, M.D. She is survived by her sister, Irene Shankman Linder (age 101); four children, Stephen, Ronald (Sandra Sussman), Susan (Len Fishman), and Daniel (William Merriman); grandchildren, Lincoln Fishman (Hilary Costa) and Anna Schnur-Fishman; and great-grandson, Leo Laurinda Fishman.
Funeral services were held May 15 at Orland’s Ewing Memorial Chapel, 1534 Pennington Road, Ewing Township.
