Talk on vintage baseball set for June 7

The Township of Ocean Historical Museum is sponsoring Russ McIver, who will present “Vintage Baseball” at 7:15 p.m. June 11 at the Township of Ocean Board of Education Offices auditorium at 163 Monmouth Road, Oakhurst.

Dressed in a period uniform, McIver will discuss 19th-century baseball when masks or gloves were not used and there was a different set of rules. Vintage baseball has a loyal following across the country and New Jersey is no exception. The first competitive game was played at Elysian Fields in Hoboken in 1846.

McIver plays baseball in the vintage club Monmouth Furnace, which is based in Allaire State Park. The team travels throughout the region playing exhibition games with other clubs whose mission is to keep baseball alive as it was played during its formative years in the 19th century.

The free event is open to the public. Guests are encouraged to bring nonperishable donations for the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. For more information, visit www.oceanmuseum.org.
