Scholastic track and field athletes will dominate the landscape on a weekend when New Jersey gears up to celebrate the Memorial Day holiday.
It’s track and field’s biggest weekend coming up with the NJSIAA State Sectionals being staged on May 27-28 at numerous locations throughout New Jersey.
In Central Jersey, Groups I and IV will be competing at Hillsborough High School while Groups II and III will be busy at Northern Burlington High School.
North Jersey, Section II, Groups I and II will be in action at Madison High School and Groups I and IV will be competing at Ridge High School.
South Jersey, Groups I and IV will be showcased at Egg Harbor Township High School and Groups II and III will be in action at Central Regional High School.
Swing off the track and on to the fields where the Greater Middlesex Conference Baseball Tournament championship game is scheduled for May 27.
The title game will be played at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, home to the Somerset Patriots of the independent Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
East Brunswick, the No. 2 seed, and J.P. Stevens, the sixth seed, are the finalists vying for the GMC championship.
The Greater Middlesex Conference Softball Tournament will be holding its semifinals on May 28 at Middlesex County College in Edison.
The top seed, South Plainfield, meets fifth-seeded East Brunswick in the first semifinal, followed by second-seeded Monroe against No. 6 South Brunswick.
The winners return to MCC on May 30 to play for the GMC championship.
NJSIAA sectional baseball tournament quarterfinals will be held on May 26.
In Central Jersey, Group IV, fourth-seeded Marlboro is the host to 16th-seeded North Brunswick and sixth-seeded Edison visits No. 3 Monroe.
In Central Jersey, Group III, 12th-seeded Allentown travels to No. 4 Ocean Township and second-seeded Middletown South welcomes No. 7 Wall Township.
In Central Jersey, Group I, top-seeded South River takes on eighth-seeded Bound Brook, No. 2 Keyport is home to 10th-seeded Dunellen and fifth-seeded Shore Regional goes to No. 4 Middlesex.
Shore Conference Softball Tournament plays resumes on May 26 with Middletown North, the third seed, meeting No. 19 Mater Dei. On May 27, fourth-seeded Middletown South plays home to No. 13 Raritan.
Second-seeded St. John Vianney is scheduled to play No. 15 Wall Township at home on May 28 in Holmdel.
Move off the high school scene and check out this major event that will be held on May. 28. If you are a road racer, there’s only one play to be and that’s in Spring Lake for the 40th running of the Spring Lake Five-Mile Run. The race is expected to attract a field of 12,500 runners.
The Spring Lake Five-Mile Run is the first in the summer-long Jersey Shore Golden Grand Prix Race Series.
