So much for drama.
The Princeton Day School boys tennis team won three of the five flight titles at the state Prep B tournament on the way to winning a fourth straight team championship.
“We had a good day on the final day but we clinched it on the Sunday,” PDS coach Will Asch said. “We finished with three wins and I was happy about that. I was thrilled on the Sunday. That was an incredible day. We had a couple nice wins.”
The Panthers went into the second and final day of the tournament having already clinched the team championship by placing four of the five flights in the finals. They went on to win three of those flights, with Scott Altmyer winning at first singles, Lex Decker winning at second singles, and the second doubles team of Leo Nye and Noah Liao also picking up a title. At first doubles, Jacob Chan and Vivek Sharma fell in the finals.
Scott won at second last year and Lex was third last year,” Asch said. “They moved up and did very well this year. We were very strong at the singles last year. This year we were not as dominating at the singles but we had a lot of depth with our lineup.
“This year we were stronger at doubles. We had a very good performance from doubles teams. Last year we pretty much swept the singles to win the championship.”
The Panthers depth was enough to dominate Prep B and win for the fourth year in a row.
“We have a very good team,” Asch said. “I was pleased with how hard the boys practiced all year. We have good players Our guys at second doubles, Leo and Noah, came up from JV and had a nice season. They are developing players.”
With Altmyer as the lone senior in the lineup, the Panthers will look for a fifth straight title next year.
“We’re losing Scott but we have everyone else back,” Asch said. “Losing your top player is tough. But we have some freshmen coming in that are good players and Lex is a good player.
“There are a lot of good tennis players in this area and a lot of good teams around here. It’s great to play those kinds of teams to help prepare us for this tournament.”
