Edison man dies hours after alleged struggle with police

NEW BRUNSWICK — A 28-year-old man died at a hospital hours after he allegedly struggled with police who reportedly revived him when they found him laying on a street in Highland Park.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the death of Daniel Nagahama of Edison, who was pronounced dead at 8:28 p.m. June 2 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, according to a statement prepared by Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey.

Nagahama was taken to the hospital after police stopped to assist the man, who was found on South Fifth Avenue in Highland Park at 5:15 p.m. that day. As police reportedly attempted to revive him, Nagahama allegedly became belligerent and struggled with police. He was not placed under arrest, but was taken to the hospital by rescue workers, Carey said.

The results of an autopsy were not available as of press time.

The death was reported to the state Office of the Attorney General, in accordance with use-of-force guidelines, Carey said.

The investigation is active and continuing. Anyone with information should call Detective Joseph Chesseri of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-745-3115.
