MONTGOMERY — The Somerset County Route 518 bridge over the Delaware and Raritan Canal, on the outskirts of Rocky Hill, has been closed in both directions until the project has been completed, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
Work on the bridge replacement project began several weeks ago, and the complete closure of the bridge is part of the project. The goal is to complete the $2.75 million bridge-replacement project by the fall, DOT officials said.
Meanwhile, traffic is being detoured to allow the bridge replacement project to proceed. Portable variable message signs will be set up to provide advanced notice to the public of traffic pattern changes, or detours.
While the bridge is closed, motorists who are traveling south on Route 206 and east on Route 518/Washington Street in Rocky Hill Borough will make a right turn onto Crescent Avenue, and then right onto County Route 605/Kingston Road/River Road. From County Route 605/River Road, motorists will turn left onto Route 27 North and then continue back onto County Route 518/Georgetown-Franklin Turnpike.
Motorists traveling west on Route 518 will turn left onto Route 27 South. From there, they will be directed to turn right onto County Route 605/Kingston Road/River Road, and then left onto Crescent Avenue. At that point, they can continue onto Route 518/Washington Street.
Traffic from Canal Road southbound will continue straight past the bridge and onto Kingston-Rocky Hill Road, which turns into Laurel Avenue. From Laurel Avenue, motorists can turn right onto Route 27 and another right turn onto County Route 605/River Road/Kingston Road.
Drivers traveling south on Route 27 will go straight on Route 27 and turn right onto County Route 605/River Road, which becomes Kingston Road. From there, they will turn left onto Crescent Avenue, and from Crescent Avenue, they will continue onto Route 518/Washington Street.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change because of the weather and other factors. Motorists should check NJDOT’s traffic information website at www.511nj.org.
