MONROE – A motor vehicle crash left the driver of a vehicle in serious condition.
Steve Barco, 43, of Rahway, was traveling east on Pergola Avenue, just east of the intersection with Lower Matchaponix Road, around 7 a.m. on July 8.
Approaching the same curve in the road was Christoph W. Caparso, 41, of Matawan, who was traveling west on Pergola, just east of the intersection with Lower Matchapanoix.
Caparso’s 2010 Honda Accord reportedly crossed the double yellow line into the eastbound lane and collided with Barco’s 2014 Dodge RAM van, according to a statement released by the Monroe Police Department.
The van rotated counter clockwise and came to a stop in the eastbound lane of Pergola, facing north, police said. The Accord ran off the road after the impact and stopped on the property of 118 Pergola Ave., facing south, police said.
Barco was transported to Raritan Bay Medical Center in Old Bridge by the Monroe Township First Aid Squad. He suffered minor head and leg injuries, police said.
Caparso was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick via a New Jersey State Police North Star helicopter. He was listed in critical condition with serious leg and internal injuries, police said.
The accident is being investigated by Sgt. Sergeis Jangols and Officer Daniel Mosakowski of the Monroe Township Traffic Safety Division. Anyone with information should call Jangols at 732-521-0222, ext. 126.
