Hillsborough may be getting express commuter bus service to New York City, per haps by the end of the year.
It may all depend on the perceived demand by Suburban Transit, according to Township Committeeman Greg Burchette at Tuesday’s governing body meeting. To that end, the bus company is surveying residents to determine the level of interest and is prepared to initiate service this year, if the response is positive and sufficient enthusiasm is shown, he said.
“Express bus service to New York would be extremely helpful to many of our commuting residents,” said Mr. Burchette.
A potential bus commuting lot would be the Promenade at Hillsborough, in front of Lowe’s or Weis Supermarkets.
Commuting residents are asked to go to www.suburbantransit.com (the address comes up as www.coachusa.com/suburban) and go to the “Hillsborough commuter survey“ link at the bottom of the page.
Responses to the eight-question survey will provide “valuable information as to the best time for express service,” the township said.
The survey asks if you currently commute from Hillsborough to New York City and, if so, how often?
It asks how you commute (drive alone, carpool, train), what time you normally begin and finish work, and where in the city you work.
If you would like to informed of the results of the survey, you can leave your street and email address.
Suburban bus commuter routes serve the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City from Mercer and Middlesex counties, particularly Princeton, South Brunswick and points east.
Rail service to New York City on the Raritan Valley line is available at the Somerville station.
Why use the bus? The company lists expenses, sanity, comfort, variety, convenience, scenery and reducing pollution.
