Police are seeking help in trying to find who burned five birdhouses — with at least some containing baby birds — in a fire pit on the St. Michael’s property on Princeton Avenue outside of Hopewell Borough.
Police were alerted July 5 at 12:24 p.m. by a man who came to headquarters to report that he found the scene while he was walking on the property.
He said he found four plastic purple martin birdhouses and a small wooden bird house had been burned in a fire pit on the property. The houses had been erected by the preserve some 200 feet from the fire pit and were intentionally removed, taken to the fire pit and burned.
Several remains of burned baby birds were found in the remnants, police said.
The Hopewell Township Police along with the state Division of Wildlife and the Hopewell Township Health Department are investigating the crimes. Anyone with information is urged to contact the police department at 609-737-3100 or the anonymous tip line at 609-737- 3100, ext. 517.
