GLASSBORO — Finally, after the vagaries of spring weather, New Jersey’s own locally grown peaches are hitting the markets, and the New Jersey Peach Promotion Council is celebrating this healthy, delicious fruit throughout the state at farmers markets, supermarkets and restaurants.
This year, nutritionists and dietitians in supermarkets will be giving demonstrations and tastings of peaches in a variety of healthy dishes, from breakfast to dessert and in between.
To kick off the season, some farmers markets are holding peach-themed events that include peach tastings and dishes, raffles for peach baskets, children’s games, music, Peach Queen appearances and more. Some farms are offering trips through their orchards for visitors to pick their own peaches.
The New Jersey Peach Promotion Council is again sponsoring “Perfect Peach Pie” amateur baking contests at farmers markets throughout the state. Judging is done by local pie connoisseurs. The New Jersey Peach Promotion Council also has creative and tasty recipes available at www.jerseypeaches.com.
