Thomas Wellington Herman on Thursday, August 4, 2016. Age 94. Husband of 71 years to the late Mary Louise Herman (nee Sabol). Father of Ronald Nevin (Marsha) Herman and Thomas Wayne (Virginia Lynn) Herman. Grandfather of Thomas Wayne (Lana) Herman, Jr., Theresa (Anthony) Burch, and David Michael Herman. Great-grandfather of Jack Burch and Theodore Herman. Brother of the late Walter (Geraldine) Herman and the late Miriam (William) Jones. Son of the late Frederick Nevin and Anna (nee Newman) Herman.
Born and raised in Northumberland, PA and later a resident of Bordentown Township, East Hazelcrest, IL, Moorestown, and Mount Laurel, Thomas was most recently a resident of Elk Township since 2004. He was a graduate of Forrest Park High School in Baltimore, MD and went on to attend the Merchant Marine Academy in New London, CT serving proudly in the Merchant Marines during World War II. Thomas worked for 37 years as a Safety Engineering Manager with Traveler’s Insurance Company in their Philadelphia office until his retirement in 1984. He served as committeeman in Bordentown Township from 1962-1970 and later mayor from 1970-1971.
Thomas loved to write. In the 1960’s he was editor and wrote for the Becca News development paper in Bordentown Township. He had a column in the Courier Post in the 1970’s and wrote for the newspaper in Holiday Village in Mount Laurel. Thomas was a frequent writer to the “Letter to the Editor” column in various newspapers over the years. He even penned several unpublished short stories.
Thomas loved to read and was especially interested in politics. He enjoyed gardening, going to the casinos with his wife, and spending time with his grandchildren. His family remembers him as a man who never said a mean word about anyone and who was an all-around nice guy.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Sunday, August 7, 2016 from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM at the BARCLAY FUNERAL HOME, 208 Maple Street, Clayton, NJ 08312.
