A measure sponsored by state Assembly Members Eric Houghtaling and Joann Downey (both D-Monmouth) to give affordable housing preference to veterans is now law in New Jersey.
The bill received unanimous support from both houses of the Legislature and was signed into law by Gov. Chris Christie at the beginning of August, according to a press release.
The law (A-2088) will ensure that New Jersey veterans, as well as surviving spouses, receive priority status for affordable housing. Specifically, the law requires the Division of Housing and Community Resources in the state Department of Community Affairs (DCA), in consultation with the state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, to provide preferential status to veterans who qualify for public housing assistance, according to the press release.
“The idea that someone could put their life on the line for our country, but have no roof over their head when they return home is simply unacceptable,” Houghtaling said. “This law will help provide a path to permanent housing for veterans who need it the most.”
“Veteran homelessness is on the decline in New Jersey and this law can be a part of continuing that trend,” Downey said. “We cannot and will not stop until every veteran in New Jersey has a place to call home.”
