Colin P. Simonelli went swimming on a hot summer afternoon Saturday at Community Park Pool, the last thing he ever did as police probe what caused the 24-year-old Princeton man’s death.
Mr. Simonelli was in the main pool, when another swimmer noticed he was unresponsive around 2 p.m., the town said. It was not immediately known what water depth he was swimming in at the time.
Lifeguards administered CPR to Mr. Simonelli, who was taken to University Medical Center, where he died later that day, the town has said.
The municipality waited until Monday to disclose that Mr. Simonelli had died, with Princeton Police investigating what is believed to be the first ever water-related fatality at the pool.
Town administrator Marc D.Dashield, the only town official commenting on the matter, said Monday that there are cameras at the pool complex, but he declined to get into whether there is any footage of Mr. Simonelli from Saturday.
He said officials are awaiting the results of an autopsy.
Mr. Simonelli, a Princeton native, is survived by his parents, Tony and Susan, two brothers, Mario and Xavier, and other relatives, according to an obituary posted at the Mather-Hodge Funeral Home. A funeral mass at St. Paul’s Church is scheduled for Wednesday.
He graduated from Princeton High School in 2010, the school district said Monday. He was a junior at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, majoring in philosophy and public policy, university spokesman DeWayne Lehman said Monday.
