• The Ocean-Monmouth Hearing Loss Support Group will meet at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters, Manalapan. Audiologist Carrie Shapiro-Basen will discuss hearing loss issues, tinnitus and communications strategies for deaf and hard of hearing people. • A free workshop about separating the myths from facts of financial aid will be presented at the Howell Library at 7 p.m. Sept. 13. • Bat Shalom Hadassah of Jackson-Howell will host a Hootenany at Doolan’s Shore Club, Spring Lake, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 27. There will be entertainment, a band for dancing and a complete lunch. Music will feature a tribute to performers of the 1960s, including Peter, Paul and Mary, the Kingston Trio and more. • The Monmouth County Genealogy Society will present its fall workshop, “An In-Depth Look at Federal Census Records,” on Oct. 1 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Community Center, 72 Broad St., Eatontown. • “Digging for Roots in the Garden State” will be the topic at the Sept. 11 Monmouth County Genealogy Society general meeting at 1:30 p.m. at the Community Center, 72 Broad St., Eatontown. The speaker will be Michelle Chubenko, a professional genealogist whose company, Jersey Roots Genealogy, performs research using statewide sources at the state archives and other local repositories for northern and central New Jersey. • Jackson Rotary Club is sponsoring a bus trip to the Tropicana Casino, Atlantic City, on Sept. 18. Cost of $34 includes bus transportation, lunch and beverages on the bus, $25 back in slot play from the casino, and gratuity for driver. • The 19th annual Citizen Police Academy will be held at the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office Public Safety Center, Freehold Township, beginning Sept. 20 (six Tuesdays, 6-8 p.m., no fee). Citizen Police Academy provides an overview of law enforcement services in Monmouth County. Applications are available to county residents age 18 or older who have no criminal record. • “Inferno at Sea, Stories of Death and Survival Aboard the Morro Castle” will be presented at the Howell Library, 318 Old Tavern Road, Howell, on Sept. 8, which is the 82nd anniversary of the fire aboard the ship. The Morro Castle was sailing along the Jersey coast on its way from Cuba to New York when disaster struck on Sept. 8, 1934. This free program, which starts at 6:30 p.m., will be presented by authors Deb Whitcraft and Gretchen Coyle, who are maritime historians. The program is co-sponsored by the Heritage Group of Howell and the Friends of the Howell Library. Light refreshments to be served.

• St. Aloysius School, 935 Bennetts Mill Road, Jackson, invites all middle school students to its annual High School Night on Sept. 22 from 7-9 p.m. Catholic high schools from the diocese, the Ocean County Vocational Performing Arts Academy and MATES, and Jackson STEM have been invited to present information to students and their parents.
