Two River Book Club to discuss ‘One Righteous Man’

RED BANK — Two River Theater will host a book club discussion of Arthur Browne’s “One Righteous Man: Samuel Battle and the Shattering of the Color Line in New York” at 6 p.m. Oct. 9 at the theater’s Victoria J. Mastrobuono Library, 21 Bridge Ave.

Hosted by Two River Community Relations Liaison Gilda Rogers, the Two River Book Club will read Browne’s story of the first African-American officer in the New York Police Department.

Joining the force in 1911, Battle served for four decades, confronted racism both within and outside the department and befriended everyone from Joe Louis to Eleanor Roosevelt.

Browne, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, will join the discussion on history, legacy and race relations in a changing America.
