PRINCETON: Town to review emergency response after death of pool patron

By Philip Sean Curran, Staff Writer
Princeton officials said this week that they would review how staff at Community Park Pool handled the emergency Aug.20 involving a swimmer who had to be rescued and later died.
Officials gave no timeline for beginning that review, with the cause of death still undisclosed for Colin Simonelli, 24. He was in the main pool around 2 p.m. when a fellow swimmer noticed he was unresponsive, the town has said.
Pulled from the water, he was taken to University Medical Center of Princeton and died later that day. Town and police officials said this week that they had no new information on the incident.
Councilwoman Jo S. Butler, the council liaison to the municipal recreation commission, said Wednesday that she thought the town’s review would consist of interviewing all people on duty that day. The municipality has said that the pool that afternoon had a full complement of lifeguards, including two at the pool that Mr. Simonelli was in.
Mr. Simonelli, of Princeton, was a college student at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. His mother, Susan, said Thursday that the family is “very grateful for the wonderful outpouring of support that we’ve received from the Princeton community.”
