A 50-year-old Hillsborough man was taken into police custody at Newark Penn Station for allegedly sexually touching a female passenger in an unwanted manner earlier in the week.
According to the New Jersey Transit Police Department, Raghavan E. Narayanan was apprehended at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 9, after officers recognized him from a description provided by the woman.
“We are grateful that the New Jersey Transit Police were able to act so quickly in apprehending this person,” NJ Transit Interim Executive Director Dennis Martin said. “The safety of our customers is paramount to us and we do not take that lightly.”
Officials said the rider reported that Mr. Narayanan inappropriately touched her while riding a NJ Transit train on Wednesday, Sept. 7.
Following his arrest, Mr. Narayanan was charged with criminal sexual contact.
By Tuesday, NJ Transit Police Chief Christopher Trucillo commended the efforts of the transportation agency’s officers on the arrest.
“The officers of the New Jersey Transit Police Department are the eyes and ears of the state’s transportation system,” Mr. Trucillo said. “Incidents like this reinforce how our police department is vigilant when it comes to protecting our customers both in plain sight and behind the scenes.”
Mr. Narayanan was issued a summons and released pending a court date later this month.
