Colts Neck
Colts Neck High School’s football team did not score until the third quarter and was unable to steal a road win against Long Branch High School Sept. 23, losing, 21-7. Colts Neck running back Carmen Catena had 101 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Catena also led Colts Neck in receiving yards with 28 on his lone catch.
The Colts Neck boys’ soccer team went 1-2 last week. They started the week with a 3-1 win against Manalapan High School Sept. 20, before dropping games to Freehold High School and Marlboro High School.
The girls’ team also started the week off with a win, beating Freehold, 2-1, Sept. 21. The Cougars also beat Marlboro, 6-1, Sept. 23, led by two goals from Isabella Fitzhenry and Kayla Lee.
A pair of Colts Neck cross-country runners took home third and fourth place at the annual Bowdoin Park Classic in Wappingers Falls, New York. Jordan Brannan took third place with a time of 16:11:7, while he was closely followed by teammate Anthony Russo, whose time of 16:13:8 was good enough for fourth place.
Howell
Howell High School lost last week on the gridiron, 38-7, at Middletown High School North Sept. 23. Howell scored first on a 5-yard pass from Edwin Morales III to Daniel Cacciatore. After trailing, 7-0, after one quarter, Middletown North scored 21 second-quarter points en route to 38 unanswered points. Morales finished 12-of-22 for 115 yards and a touchdown, while Nick Chambers led Howell on the ground with 38 yards on seven carries.
Freehold
Freehold’s football team was defeated by Neptune High School, 28-7, on the road Sept. 23.
The boys’ soccer team rebounded from being shut out by Marlboro Sept. 19 to beat Colts Neck, 3-0, Sept. 21. Jake Brower, Phil Franco and Andres Rizo each chipped in goals in the shutout victory.
Freehold Township
Freehold Township High School was able to squeak out a home football win over Marlboro, 42-36, on Sept. 23. Freehold was ahead, 28-20, at halftime and survived a pair of successful two-point conversions by Marlboro to secure the victory.
Freehold quarterback Charles Sabbagh was 13-of-14 for 244 yards and two touchdowns, while his counterpart, Jared Wright, was 11-of-21 for 117 yards and a touchdown.
Marlboro running back Cameron Caorsi had 241 yards and three touchdowns, as well as two catches for nine yards. Sabbagh, who also had a rushing touchdown, completed passes to five different teammates, led by Adrian Rybaltowski, who had four catches for 98 yards and a touchdown.
Manalapan
Manalapan’s defense pitched a shutout en route to a 41-0 gridiron victory over Old Bridge High School Sept. 23. The visiting Braves scored 14 first-quarter points and were never threatened.
Quarterback Luke Corcione led the way, going 11-of-14 for 162 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Running Back Naim Mayfield chipped in 186 yards and three touchdowns on the ground on just 13 carries. The Braves defense made things difficult for Old Bridge quarterback Artur Sitkowski, who was just 4-of-14 for 35 yards passing.
The Manalapan girls’ soccer team went 1-1 last week. It started off with a 2-1 victory at Neptune Sept. 21 before dropping a contest to Freehold Township, 3-0, Sept. 23.
Marlboro
The Marlboro boys’ soccer team went 3-0 last week. It started the week off with a 1-0 home win against Freehold Sept. 19. Marlboro went on to best Freehold Township, 2-1, Sept. 21 and shut out Colts Neck, 4-0, Sept. 23.
