Freecycling event scheduled for Oct. 8

The Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission (EBEC) will sponsor its Fall Freecycling Day 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 8 in the parking lot at Crystal Springs Family Aquatic Center, Dunhams Corner Road. Items may be dropped off for freecycling 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in the parking lot; browsing and pickup are set through 2 p.m. In the event of rain, log on to friendsebec.com for updates.

Freecycling days are designed to keep unwanted household items out of landfills and to provide a chance to find serviceable and/or unusual items. There is no charge to participate in the “free-trade” event, which also attracts small theater groups looking for props and costumes and craftspeople seeking items for projects.

Usable items must be offered free of charge. Freecycling is a community event intended for people to exchange usable items for personal use, not for resale.

Recommended freecycling items include clothing, shoes, bicycles, fish tanks, dishes, pots and pans, toys, silverware, small appliances, tools, power tools, kitchen items, garage items, electronics and pet supplies. Large furniture pieces will not be accepted. It is recommended that boxes containing toys, games and anything with small parts be taped shut.

Prohibited items include mattresses, televisions, computer monitors, paints, VHS tapes, computer disks, pesticides, tires, toiletries, unframed mirrors, food or any hazardous materials. The Friends of EBEC reserves the right to reject items.

Volunteers are still needed to help staff the event. Information may be found at friendsebec.com/freecycling.htm.

Clothing, shoes and toys left at the end of the day will be picked up by Fashion Republic, which distributes the items for reuse elsewhere. Other items left at the end of the day, along with unusable and broken items, will be recycled. East Brunswick Freecycling Days also are sponsored by the East Brunswick Recycling Center.
