Performers of the Week

Scholastic stars were shining on the athletic fields not just locally but also across the state border in New York.

Here is a look at who sparkled in New Jersey as well as in New York.

The Manalapan football tam produced a one-two knockout punch on Old Bridge during its 41-0 victory on Sept. 23.

Quarterback Luke Coccione passed for 207 yards and two touchdowns and Naim Mayfield rushed fr 190 yards and scored three TDs to guide Manalapan to its impressive victory.

Charles Sabbagh missed on just one of his 14 passes, completing 13 en route to ringing up 244 yards and two TDs on Sept. 23 when he steered Freehold Township past Marlboro, 42-36.

Dwight wilkerson erupted for 280 yards on the ground and ran t three touchdown’s when he powered Middletown North to a 38-7 triumph over Howell on Sept. 23.

Zach Bair gained 164 yards rushing and scored one touchdown on Sept. 23 when he helped send Red Bank Catholic past Ocean Township, 20-7.

Manny Resto rushed for 176 yards to carry Saint Joseph of Metuchen to a 41-6 victory over Colonia on Sept. 24.

From the gridiron to the soccer pitch…..

Matt Mischler collected two goals and two assists when Monroe posted a 4-1 boys’ soccer victory over New Brunswick on Sept. 24. That triumph improved Monroe to 7-0 on the year.

Miek Schoener pumped in three goals to guide the Jackson Memorial boys’ soccer team to a 5-0 victory over Brick Township on Sept. 22.

Gabby D’Emilio connected on four goals when Woodbridge rolled to an 8-2 girls’ soccer victory over North Brunswick on Sept. 24.

On the tennis courts…..

Charlotte Park scored a victory at first singles and paced her Monroe girls’ tennis team to a 5-0 victory over Perth Amby on Sept. 20.

Now cross the border into New York and see how our local cross-country standouts fared.

In Wappingers Falls, New York, on Sept. 24, the highly touted Christian Brothers Academy boys’ cross-country tam, ranked No 1 in the state and fourth nationally, captured the Division 1 race championship in the Bowdoin Park Classic. The CBA effort was led by Brian Hill, who finished third with a clocking of 16:17.

Individually at the Bowdoin Park Classic, Elliot Gindi of Ocean Township placed first in the Division 1 race with a time of 16:08.1

In the Division 2 race, Old Bridge’s Rey Rivera posted the best time of the day for all New Jersey runners when he crossed first in the Division 2 race with a clocking of 16:06.

 

On the college scene…..

Middlesex County College’s Amber Rauh  of Edison has been named Garden State Athletic Conference Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 24.

Rauh, a sophomore outside hitter for MCC,  helped the Colts win two of their four matches in the week. They were victorious over Delaware County Community College and Bucks County Community College, each in three sets. Rauh had 48 kills, 60 digs and 19 aces during the week. Middlesex is currently 4-7 this season.
