Colts Neck
Despite trailing at halftime, Colts Neck High School’s football team was able to take care of business at home with a 28-20 win over Marlboro High School Oct. 1.
Carmen Catena kicked things off for Colts Neck in the first quarter with an 82-yard run for a score. Marlboro’s Carmen Caorsi returned the favor with an 8-yard touchdown run of his own. Justin Marcus then scored on a 36-yard pass from Jared Wright to give Marlboro a 14-8 lead at halftime.
Colts Neck scored the first three touchdowns of the second half with a rushing touchdown from Hayden Volk and two rushing touchdowns from Catena. Coarsi added a 66-yard touchdown run for Marlboro to bring the final score to 28-20.
For Marlboro, Marcus had 84 receiving yards and Coarsi had 171 rushing yards to go with his pair of touchdowns. While scoring three touchdowns for Colts Neck, Catena also had 234 rushing yards on 29 carries.
The Colts Neck boys’ soccer team was on both ends of 1-0 games this week, beating Howell High School Sept. 27 and dropping one to Neptune High School Sept. 29. Colts Neck was also shut out by Freehold Township High School, 2-0, to close the week.
Freehold
The Freehold High School girls’ soccer team started the week off with a 4-1 loss to Freehold Township Sept. 27. The girls then were able to grab a 2-1 victory Sept. 29 over Trinity Hall.
Maria Amalfitano scored a goal, while Ashley Fuentes added a goal and an assist. Goalie Stephanie Moir had five saves for Freehold.
However, the Colonials dropped the final game of the week, 3-2, to Marlboro.
Amalfitano added another goal, while Lauren Simon also scored for Freehold.
Freehold Township
Freehold Township’s football team escaped with a 10-6 road win Sept. 30 against Neptune. Anthony Lotti led the defense with both an interception and a forced fumble, which was recovered by D’Andre Sanders. Quarterback Charles Sabbagh led the offense with 104 passing yards, connecting with Adrian Rybaltowski for the lone touchdown.
The Freehold Township boys’ soccer team captured a win against Freehold, 3-2, Sept. 27. Adrian Barajas had two goals for Freehold Township to lead the way. Freehold Township also had a 3-1 win over Howell and a 2-0 win over Colts Neck last week.
Howell
In a high-scoring affair, Howell dropped a home game to Toms River High School North, 58-33, Sept. 30. Howell went down 37-20 at the half and was not able to threaten the Mariners in the second half.
Howell was led by its ground game with a pair of backs topping 100 rushing yards. Mekai Gandy had 100 yards on 14 carries, and quarterback Edwin Morales III had 110 yards on the ground with 14 carries. Both Gandy and Morales had rushing touchdowns, and Nick Chambers added two rushing touchdowns to go with his 61 yards.
Manalapan
Manalapan High School blanked Freehold on the gridiron, 14-0, to take a road win Oct. 1.
Quarterback Luke Corcione threw for a pair of touchdowns, connecting with Symir Blacknall in the second quarter and Michael Taylor in the fourth quarter. For the game Corcione was 10-of-19 passing for 121 yards. Blacknall had two catches for 39 yards, while Naim Mayfield had 154 yards on the ground on 21 carries.
Jonathan Pimentel led the defense with two sacks and eight tackles.
Marlboro
The Marlboro boys’ soccer team kicked its week off with a 3-1 victory over Neptune Sept. 27. Brian Dates, Steven Karp and P.J. Ringel all chipped in goals en route to the home win.
Marlboro was able to build on that win two days later with a 2-0 win over Manalapan. Dates and Ringel once again added goals, while Karp had an assist.
Marlboro then closed the week strong with a 4-1 win over Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School Oct. 1. Ringel had his third goal of the week, while Jared Markowski, Jacob Grine and Varazdat Topuzyan also scored goals.
