COLTS NECK
While Manalapan High School defeated Colts Neck High School in football at night Oct. 7 by a 41-8 score, Colts Neck did ring up a victory over Manalapan earlier in the day when Colts Neck scored a 2-1 boys’ soccer victory over host Manalapan.
Colts Neck rallied from a 1-0 deficit at the half when Christian Saavedra and Zach Schaffer each connected for a goal in the second half. Don Friedrich stopped six shots to seal the victory for the Cougars.
FREEHOLD
Freehold High School’s football team erased an 18-point deficit against Monroe Township High School Oct. 7 behind the sparkling play of quarterback Ashante Worthy.
Worthy rushed to five touchdowns and passed for two scores, giving him a hand in seven touchdowns as the Colonials stormed to a 52-27 victory.
Monroe built a 27-9 lead before Freehold ripped off 43 straight points.
Tori Tiefenthaler collected a goal and an assist and Belly Reynoso stopped five shots to steer the Freehold field hockey team past Colts Neck, 2-0, Oct. 6 in Colts Neck.
FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP
Freehold Township High School’s undefeated football season continued Oct. 7, when the host team posted a 42-22 victory over Perth Amboy High School.
Max Nowak and Adrian Rybaltowski each scored two touchdowns to guide the Freehold Township attack. Kevin Doherty sealed the victory in the second half when he returned an interception to the end zone, as Freehold Township improved its record on the year to 5-0.
HOWELL
Quarterback Edwin Morales III engineered Howell High School’s 24-15 victory over Neptune High School in football action Oct. 7 in Howell.
Morales III connected with Nasime Brantley for a 24-yard touchdown and he hit Ryan Mazik on a 9-yard touchdown pass — both coming in the second quarter. Brantley finished with three receptions for 72 yards and Mazik ended with four catches that totaled 51 yards. Howell was also led by running back Nick Chambers, who gained 85 yards on 11 rushes.
In girls’ soccer action, Jessica O’Brien fired in two goals to spark Howell’s 3-2 victory over Marlboro High School Oct. 5 in Marlboro.
MANALAPAN
Manalapan’s girls’ soccer team continued to post victories when the Braves won twice last week to improve to 10-1 on the year.
Manalapan blanked Freehold, 3-0, Oct. 5 in Freehold behind the scoring of Ariella Kaplan, who connected on two goals. Goalie Ariel Kamen turned back eight shots to ring up the shutout.
Two days, the Braves held off the host, Colts Neck, 1-0, when Mya Donnelly converted a goal off an assist from Kaplan in the second half. Again, Kamen earned the shutout with eight saves.
MARLBORO
Marlboro’s football team provided one of the most exciting games of this past weekend when the Mustangs defeated East Brunswick High School, 20-14, in overtime Oct. 8 in Marlboro.
The hero for Marlboro was Jonny Helff, who emerged in the role as featured back when Cameron Caorsi was injured with a hamstring in the first half.
Helff scored three touchdowns, including the winning touchdown in overtime when he darted 31yards to the end zone to break the 14-14 tie. He also scored on a pass of 9 yards from quarterback Kyle Moore in the second quarter and blasted 1 yard into the end zone in the third quarter. Helff ended with 158 yards on the ground.
Marlboro’s girls’ soccer team rebounded from a loss earlier in the week to Howell when it scored a 2-1 victory over Matawan Regional High School Oct. 8. Sofia James pitched the shutout in goal with 15 saves.
