An East Windsor woman is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in a state court on charges that she used what at this time is considered an unknown object in January to beat her mother-in-law to death inside the family home on Mozart Court.
Tasneem Diwan, 46, is charged in a three-count indictment with murder and two weapons offenses in the alleged slaying Jan.26 of Safia Diwan, 73, who authorities alleged was hit “numerous times” and died of blunt force trauma to the head. Ms. Diwan faces 30 years to life in prison if convicted of murder.
Ms. Diwan is due to appear in Superior Court, in Trenton. She has remained in jail on $1 million bail since her capture.
“It’s a tragic situation,” said her attorney, Joseph Mazranni, by phone on Wednesday.
The victim was found in a pool of blood in a front room of the residence, with her son, Nauman Diwan, who is married to Tasneem Diwan, discovering the body, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office has said.
In announcing the indictment, the Prosecutor’s Office alleged last week that blood-stained clothes, “believed to belong to Tasneem Diwan, were found in a hamper in the laundry room.” As for the alleged murder weapon was, authorities said it was an “unknown object.”
Ms. Diwan went on the lam for three days after the slaying, authorities have said. She was found in the bus terminal at the Tropicana casino in Atlantic City on Jan.29 and later charged with the homicide, the Prosecutor’s Office has said.
The Prosecutor’s Office has said Tasneem Diwan had admitted her involvement in the alleged murder.
