MILLTOWN – Roughly 20 lawn signs were placed along front lawns on Riva Avenue to encouraged residents to “Slow Down in Our Town.”
Placed by Milltown police traffic officers with permission of homeowners, the sign initiative is a speed reduction county-wide program, sponsored by Middlesex County in partnership with local law enforcement agencies and their neighborhood residents, according to a statement prepared by the Milltown Police Department.
The program entails strategically deploying placement of lawn signs in an identified neighborhood based upon a need for speed reduction. The signs saturate a small area usually consisting of a single block and then are moved around the neighborhood periodically because studies show that signs permanently erected on streets become so commonplace that motorists often ignore them, according to the statement. Shortly after the initial deployment, local law enforcement will then escalate this awareness program into one that employs enforcement.
