A 25 year-old Hillsborough man was peacefully taken into custody on Sunday after a more than two-hour ordeal that brought county SWAT to his Amwell Road home.
According to Acting Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson, Acting Chief of County Detectives John W. Fodor and Hillsborough Township Chief of Police Darren Powell, Hillsborough police received a report just after 10 a.m. on Sunday that John R. Alcaide fired a gun out of his bedroom window.
Once on the scene, officials said responding officers spoke with some family members who were standing outside of the residence.
Despite their efforts to contact Mr. Alcaide, police were unable to reach the man after he barricaded himself within the home.
Hillsborough Township Police immediately established a perimeter and activated the Somerset County Emergency Response Team, which consists of the County SWAT Team, Hostage Crisis Negotiators, Tactical Emergency Medical Personnel, the Somerset County Communications Mobile Command Center and the Hillsborough Township Office of Emergency Management Command Post.
Acting Prosecutor Robertson said that at approximately 12:29 p.m., Mr. Alcalde presented himself to SWAT officers from his bedroom window.
Officers spoke with Mr. Alcaide before he subsequently exited the house unarmed. He was taken into custody by SWAT officers without incident.
As a result, Mr. Alcaide was charged with engaging in threatening or violent behavior, creating a hazardous or dangerous condition and possession of a controlled dangerous substance (marijuana under 50 grams). Each charge is a Disorderly Person Offense.
He was released on his own recognizance pending a Hillsborough Township Municipal Court appearance on November 15.
