This month, Freehold Borough resident Susan Davies will travel to Africa as part of an annual Christmas trip sponsored by the Holmdel-based nonprofit organization Sylvia’s Children, which for 13 years has helped to improve the lives of more than 1,200 children living in a Ugandan village, according to a press release.
Sylvia Allen is the founder of Sylvia’s Children and she is a member of the choir Davies leads as the Minister of Music at the Holmdel Community United Church of Christ. The choir has sponsored a child for seven years.
“I was given a special opportunity to go on the 2016 Christmas trip and I consider it to be an opportunity of a lifetime,” Davies said. “I will be able to witness firsthand the positive transformation that is possible when people are committed to making a difference in this world. I look forward to seeing the children’s smiles, and Sylvia says she can’t wait for me to hear them sing.”
During the trip, Davies will help the children attending the Mbiriizi Advanced Primary School ring in their Christmas season by giving them a special day, in which they will get gifts, such as new shirts and dresses, a lunch and celebratory cake, and goodie bags with toys, stickers and candy, according to the press release.
In addition to improving the lives of the children in the village, the overall mission of Sylvia’s Children since its inception has been to seek to implement and foster a self-sustainable economic and entrepreneurial system at the school, according to the press release.
