Hightstown officials and residents gathered Oct. 22 to unveil the new firefighter memorial located in front of the Hightstown Engine Company No. 1 Firehouse. The memorial committee worked tirelessly for two and a half years to complete this project. The memorial committee consisted of Chairwoman Cindy McClenahan, Past Chief Peter Esch, Past Chief Neal Glackin, President/Firefighter Mark Madonia, Firefighter Timothy Curry, and Firefighter Mathew Lawson. The past Chiefs who unveiled the memorial were Peter Esch, Carl Dye Sr., Lawrence Blake, Lawrence Jones, Neal Glackin, and John Archer. The memorial is made of black and gray granite. The bell is solid brass and the yolk is iron, both were from the original stone supports. One plaque reads the Fireman’s prayer while the other is dedicated to those who died in the line of duty. J. Thompson and D. Lidke have died in the line of duty while serving Hightstown and the greater community. George Thompson thanked the memorial committee, the fire company, first aid squad, and Hightstown for honoring his father. Terri Lidke thanked everyone for remembering her brother.
