Residents who took to the polls in Hillsborough Township earlier today elected incumbent Republican Committeeman and current Mayor Frank DelCore back to his seat on the governing body for another three year term.
According to unofficial vote counts provided by Township Clerk Pamela Borek, Mr. DelCore earned 11,535 votes, while his Democrat opponent Laurie Poppe, reportedly took in just 7,708 votes.
Unofficial tallies show that Hillsborough voters also supported incumbent Republican Leonard Lance in his bid to remain on the House of Representatives with 10,140 votes. His opponent, Democrat Peter Jacob, earned 8,715 votes.
Voters overwhelmingly turned down Ballot Question No. 1 with 13,210 ‘no’ votes and 3,477 ‘yes’ votes. The ballot question asked whether casinos should be constructed and operated in northern parts of the state, such as Jersey City and Hoboken.
Ballot No. 2 was also voted down by borough voters, albeit with a smaller margin. According to preliminary counts, voters said ‘no’ with 8,908 to the 7,657 votes that said ‘yes.’ That ballot question called for an amendment to the state constitution that would require all funds generated by the recent gas tax hike to go strictly to the Transportation Trust Fund.
Though Republicans enjoyed wins on those two fronts, Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump fell to Democrat hopeful Secretary Hillary Clinton in Hillsborough, earning 8,475 votes to her 8,976.
