Middlesex County Democrats will remain in control of the sheriff and freeholder positions.
Incumbent Middlesex County Sheriff Mildred Scott received 175,030 votes, or 63 percent. Republican challenger Pedro “Pete” Pisar recorded 104, 408 votes, or 37 percent.
Incumbent Middlesex County Freeholders Kenneth Armwood, Charles Kenny and Blanquita Valenti received 161,899, 163,906 and 166,016 votes, respectively, comprising roughly 60 percent of the total votes combined.
Republican challengers Katie Calabrese, Jimmy Hu and Joseph Scillieri received 105,583, 96,989 and 105,439 votes, respectively.
For the state ballot question regarding casinos in North Jersey, Middlesex County residents voted down the proposal by a tally of 77 percent to 23 percent.
However, for the state ballot question regarding where gas tax funds will go, county residents supported the measure by a vote of 51 percent to 49 percent.
