METUCHEN — A fire that was contained to a basement at a Middlesex Avenue home closed down Middlesex Avenue from Grove Avenue to Jesmond Road for an hour and half over the weekend, according to officials.
At approximately 8:20 p.m., on Dec. 4, the Metuchen Fire Department was dispatched to a smoke condition in a home on Middlesex Avenue, which upon arrival, it was determined that there was a fire in the basement, officials said.
Approximately 20 Metuchen firefighters were on scene. Mutual aid fire apparatus from South Plainfield, North Stelton in Piscataway and Iselin No. 11 responded to help cover the town.
The Metuchen Police Department closed down Middlesex Avenue from Grove Avenue to Jesmond Road for about an hour and a half.
Emergency medical units from Metuchen and JFK were also on scene.
The fire was extinguished quickly and there were no reported civilian or firefighter injuries.
Fire officials said it is important to note that whenever possible, interior doors in one’s home should be kept closed, which can limit the spread of smoke and fire allowing residents time to escape and firefighters to respond.
Fortunately, this basement door was kept closed and the fire was contained to the room of origin, officials said.
