Lured by a program which included Rachmaninoff, Shastakovich, Mendelssohn and Dvorak, I found my way to Taplin Auditorium, Fine Hall on Dec. 10 for an afternoon concert featuring “Opus 21” a chamber music group founded in 2014 and made up of Princeton University undergraduate pianists and string players.
According to the program, most Opus 21 members started their musical studies at an early age and arrived in Princeton after performing with prestigious symphony orchestras and receiving top prizes and awards both in the U.S. and abroad.
I was not disappointed, as the group’s dynamic and sensitive musical interpretations “blew me away” as I observed they did most of the audience. Much to my surprise, many of these outstanding musicians are not pursuing careers in music, but are studying disciplines as diverse as molecular biology, computer science and languages.
Opus 21 is a tour de force on Princeton’s musical scene and I eagerly await their next performance.
