East Windsor OKs another Eagle Scout project designed to help township

Boy Scout Troop 5700 has a busy year ahead. For the second time this month, it has presented the mayor and council with an Eagle Scout Service Project proposal to be completed in an effort to serve East Windsor Township.
By a vote tally of 6-0 at the council regular meeting Dec. 20, Mayor Janice Mironov and council members unanimously approved this latest project proposal, which was presented by 17-year-old Daniel Knight Burgess. Council member Marc Lippman was not in attendance.
Daniel’s proposal outlined three objectives for township officials. The first was “to provide service to his community by cleaning and painting selected fire hydrants as well as painting yellow street markers to help identify Fire Hydrants in areas of East Windsor Township.”
The second objective was to demonstrate an important part of the Scout oath, “to help other people at all times”; and the third was for Daniel to learn, improve and demonstrate his skills in leading other Scouts.
Within Daniel’s proposal he explained that fire hydrants in good working order are critical to safety. He also said that deteriorating fire hydrants can make it difficult for the fire department to operate them and do their job properly.
Through Daniel’s research he found out that regulations stipulate hydrants must be a certain color based on the size of the water main, and with the help of town council, he has secured a map of the area the Scouts intend to work on which contains the necessary information.
The current plan is to restore approximately 30 hydrants in the area, and for the project to be completed by the spring of 2017.
