It has been awhile now, but I cannot forget the News Transcript’s excellent story about the Colts Neck K-8 School District Board of Education and the Colts Neck Township Committee fighting to keep children who live on Naval Weapons Station Earle from attending school in their town.
I can understand people not wanting their taxes to increase, since students require teachers and teachers require a salary, but these children on the base do live in Colts Neck, which already has empty classrooms.
However, I am most concerned that excluding these kids will deprive Colts Neck students of the opportunity to experience more diversity.
Being in class at a young age with other youngsters whose backgrounds may differ from one’s own is a very important learning opportunity that becomes ever more important in an increasingly complex world.
I hope the people of Colts Neck see the value in this and welcome the children from NWS Earle into their fine school system.
