SOUTH AMBOY — The South Amboy Police Department has announced the passing of retired Patrolman Roy Dragotta.
“We send our condolences and prayers to his family on this loss. Roy was an outstanding police officer, a wonderful father and great friend. Many will remember his big smile and warm personality not only while he was patrolling, but also while he was keeping us all safe while we were in Foodtown. He will definitely be missed,” the department posted on its Facebook page.
Joseph “Roy” Dragotta, 80, of South Amboy, died on Jan. 22 at Haven Hospice at JFK Medical Center in Edison, according to his obituary from The Gundrum Service “Home for Funerals” in South Amboy.
Born in Perth Amboy, he lived in South Amboy for 18 years and another 29 years in Parlin before returning to South Amboy in 2011.
Before retiring, he was employed by the South Amboy Police Department as the senior patrolman, where he earned the nickname “Broadway Joe” from the early years walking the beat. He was also employed as a security guard at Foodtown in South Amboy for more than 20 years.
A member and past president of PBA Local 63, he was also a social member of the Mechanicsville Fire Department.
Funeral services will be held at The Gundrum Service followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in South Amboy. Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery in Hopelawn.
