The South River Police Department is accepting applications for its 2017 Citizen Police Academy set to begin March 15 in the police department courtroom, 61 Main St., and at some offsite locations. The eight-session academy will be held 7-9 p.m. Wednesdays and will conclude with a presentation of certificates on May 3. Classes will be limited to a maximum of 12 participants.
The academy will provide citizens with a glimpse into the real world of policing. Participants will receive a variety of training including, but not limited to, criminal law, motor-vehicle law, morals and ethics training, community-oriented policing and motor-vehicle-accident investigation. Students also will take part in various hands-on applications such as conducting motor-vehicle stops and scenario re-enactment.
All applicants must be residents of South River and a minimum of 21 years of age, have no criminal record (a detailed background investigation will be conducted), and must possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license.
Applications, which may be picked up 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Mondays-Fridays at the South River Police Department Records Bureau inside the police department at 61 Main St., must be turned in no later than March 1.
