An annual scholarship program provided by the New Jersey League of Municipalities again received backing from Hillsborough, as Mayor Carl Suraci recently announced the continued the township’s partnership in the program., Announced during the Jan. 24 meeting, Hillsborough will participate in the League of Municipalities’ Louis Bay II, Future Municipal Leaders Scholarship Competition., With the township’s participation, local students can vie for three $1,000 scholarships, though they will compete against students from throughout New Jersey for those funds., During the meeting, Mayor Suraci said the purpose of the scholarship was to “advance the virtues of elected and volunteer positions in municipal government while raising awareness of municipal government in general.”, Competing students will be tasked with writing an approximately 500 word essay on the theme “What My Mayor and Governing Body Do Best.”, Mayor Suraci will then select one winner from the township to go on as a state semi-finalist. Once at that level, the student’s essay and application will be reviewed by the League of Municipalities’ Scholarship Committee., Just 15 finalists will be selected from that pool of applicants and from there, three winners will be selected., The state finalists and grand prize winners will be selected on May 6., Along with the township, the Hillsborough Township School District announced their continued support of the scholarship program, offering students the chance to use the Naviance program to learn more., “We are delighted to partner with the Township through the New Jersey League of Municipalities to participate in this scholarship competition opportunity for our students,” Superintendent Dr. Jorden Schiff said., Students interested in the scholarship program must have their applications completed and submitted to Mayor Suraci by March 10., Further information regarding the scholarship can be found on the Naviance Program and the Guidance Office at Hillsborough High School.
