EAST BRUNSWICK — The East Brunswick Public Library has achieved a milestone 50 years in the making.
On Feb. 12, the library circulated its 30 millionth item.
“This is a huge accomplishment for us,” Library Director Jennifer Podolsky said. “Our customers realize that libraries are more than just books and stop by to borrow movies, music, video games and even museum passes. They can now borrow digital items from us on their own schedule.”
The library does not know exactly know what book or other item was the 30 millionth item checked out, according to a statement prepared by the library, as the computer circulation system calculates the total number of checkouts at the end of the day. The final count for Feb. 12 was 30,000,225.
To celebrate the occasion, the Friends of the Library held a prize drawing for every customer who checked out an item that day, which was won by East Brunswick resident Michelle Brill.
“When I moved to East Brunswick in 1983 one of the first places I knew I needed to find was the library,” Brill said. “It wowed me then and continues to impress each time I go. I think it’s the pride of East Brunswick.”
This milestone coincides with the library’s 50th anniversary, which will be celebrated this May.
