MILLSTONE – Residents of Millstone Township will have an opportunity to learn and ask questions about Monmouth County’s plan to construct a roundabout that will replace an intersection that is a source of safety concerns.
On March 29, representatives of the county and the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) will host a meeting concerning a project that will replace the Scooter Corner intersection with a roundabout.
A roundabout is a traffic calming device. It is smaller than a traffic circle.
The county and NJTPA representatives will be present from 6-9 p.m. at the municipal courthouse, 215 Millstone Road. The meeting will begin with a presentation about the project. A question and answer session will start at 7 p.m.
According to a notice from Millstone Township, the purpose of the meeting is to provide information about the project and to solicit input and comments regarding the proposed improvements.
Questions will be answered by county engineering staff, an NJTPA representative and the project’s consulting design engineer, according to the notice.
Scooter Corner is a five-spoke intersection that is not controlled by a traffic signal. The location is the meeting point of Stagecoach Road (Route 524), Millstone Road and Paint Island Spring Road.
Monmouth County’s plan calls for the construction of a roundabout at Scooter Corner.
In the past few years, the county has constructed roundabouts at the entrance to Brookdale Community College in Lincroft and at the junction of several roads in Colts Neck at a location that is not unlike the multi-spoked Scooter Corner intersection in Millstone.
Monmouth County Freeholder Director Tom Arnone, who sits on the NJTPA, previously said the county has received a verbal commitment for $1.75 million in federal funding that should cover all of the construction costs for the roundabout and a good portion of the construction management costs.
In the early fall of 2016, Arnone said that in a best case scenario, construction of the roundabout could begin in the fall of 2017.
According to the public notice regarding the March 29 meeting, the project will be funded through the NJTPA using the Federal Highway Administration’s Highway Safety Improvement Program funds.
Written comments about the Scooter Corner project will be accepted through April 14. Comments may be sent by email to project manager Robert Strang-Wolf at [email protected]
