PLUMSTED – Police are still trying to identify the person who placed an explosive device inside the mailbox at a Plumsted Township residence in late February.
As of March 9, the incident was still under investigation, according to Plumsted Police Cpl. Jason Reilly.
At 10:50 a.m. Feb. 25, Plumsted police officers were dispatched to 3 Brookwood Drive to investigate a report of a suspicious device in a mailbox. The officers observed two cylindrical devices taped to a larger cylindrical device, according to a press release.
Information provided by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office stated that police requested the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office bomb-sniffing canine.
Other units that responded to the scene were the sheriff’s office Crime Scene Investigations division, the New Jersey State Police bomb squad and the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Arson Unit.
According to the prosecutor’s office, an examination of the device by members of the Arson Unit determined it consisted of two small firecrackers taped to an aerosol spray can. Officials said the device did not function.
Following an investigation, the scene was cleared by the state police bomb squad.
On Feb. 27, a press release issued by the prosecutor’s office said law enforcement personnel believe a juvenile may have been responsible for placing the device in the mailbox.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 609-758-7185.
