MILLSTONE – Municipal officials are establishing new regulations for a Halloween curfew in Millstone Township.
On April 19, the Township Committee introduced an ordinance that, if adopted, will amend curfew regulations during the period that includes Halloween.
Mayor Michael Kuczinski, Deputy Mayor Fiore Masci and committee members Gary Dorfman, Nancy Grbelja and Bob Kinsey voted to introduce the ordinance.
Under the terms of the ordinance, no one under the age of 18 is permitted to be in any public place, street or property in Millstone between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. from Oct. 28 through Nov. 1.
Previously, individuals under the age of 18 were not permitted in those locations between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
The ordinance adds returning home from religious meetings and community meetings as exceptions to the curfew. Existing exceptions are returning home from work, night school, fraternal organization meetings and school meetings.
Additional exceptions to the curfew, according to the ordinance, are going to or returning from a doctor’s office or dentist’s office where treatment has been or is to be given, or if the person under 18 is accompanied by a parent or a guardian over 20 years of age.
Also added is the penalty for violating the curfew. According to the ordinance, anyone convicted of violating the curfew will be required to perform community service and may face a fine of up to $1,000.
If a person under 18 and his or her parent or guardian is convicted of violating the curfew, they will be required to perform community service together, according to the ordinance.
A public hearing on the ordinance is scheduled for May 17. The committee may adopt the ordinance that evening.
