World Language students from Red Bank Regional High School swept all three awards at a state competition, where they placed first, second and third.
In a 2017 competition sponsored by the Italian Teachers Association of New Jersey (ITANJ), Taylor Adams of Union Beach won first place, Sirenia Tochihuitl of Red Bank finished in second and the team of Raymond Soya and Liam Tyler of Shrewsbury placed third.
“They are hardworking students and very creative,” said Federica Proietti Cesaretti, Red Bank High’s World Language teacher of Italian. “I am so proud of them.”
Red Bank High competed with eight other high schools, with approximately 40 students in all.
The students submitted multi-media projects in Italian regarding Italy’s response to climate change, according to a press release from the school.
According to the ITANJ, students were judged on written text, oral expression, the use of a minimum of two technological tools and a clear passion and enthusiasm for the Italian language. T
he committee stated in their contest requirements that students must show how Italy has impacted/contribute to the development, the preservation and safeguarding of our environment.
Taylor created a master video mixing other videos.
“[The video was] in clear and beautiful Italian,” Cesaretti said.
“I covered how climate change is an influencing factor in the flooding in Venice and the earthquakes in Umbria,” Taylor said.
Sirenia presented the ways Italy is conserving energy with Italian narration.
“Something as simple as loading a full dishwasher to wash dishes rather than doing them by hand is one way [Italy is conserving energy],” Sirenia said.
Raymond and Liam created a newscast on how Italy handles is waste and recycling and other solutions to combat this crucial global problem.
