Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) recently moved five Osprey nests to safer locations in an attempt to preserve the birds and the power lines where their nests were located.
According to a press release by JCP&L, the company just completed a survey of its Monmouth and Ocean County Osprey nest platforms.
The platforms were built to move Osprey nests that were once on power lines in the area. The power company moved seven nests to safer platforms, increasing the total nest moves to 12, according to the release.
To date, according to the release, a dozen ospreys have returned to relocated nests in Bayville, Monmouth Beach, Oceanport, Ocean Township and Spring Lake Heights.
According to the release, in addition to moving the nests, the company put new parts on existing lines, discouraging other Osprey from making nests on hazardous poles.
Both the platforms and parts were created to meet New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection specifications, and are a part of a comprehensive program that surveys, moves nests, and prevents injuries to the birds and/or interruption to customers, according to the release.
JCP&L will continue to survey all of their poles all around the state throughout the year to identify other nests that could be at risk, according to the company’s statement.
