Elizabeth Jordan Dill Hume(s) died at age 82 in Seattle on January 20, 2017 from complications due to a stroke.
She was a kind and creative woman. Her son, Malcolm G. Humes, died of a heart attack at age 55. She is survived by three children: Margaret H. Bartlo (Allen Bartlo) of NJ, Kathryn P. Humes (Kurt Waldenberg) of WA, and Elizabeth Humes Estep of MD, as well as nieces, nephews and five beloved grandchildren: Chris, Annie, Beryn, Sam and Katie. She was married to Graham Humes from 1954-1976 and they raised their children in the Philadelphia area.
She studied horticulture and was proud of her role with the Morris Arboretum, University of Pennsylvania exhibit at the 1982 Chelsea Flower Show in London, titled “Penn’s Woods Revisited – Three Hundred Years of Plant Exchange Between Britain and America.” She lived and worked at the Findhorn Foundation in Scotland from 1984-86. From 1990-1994, she lived in New Jersey and was on the staff of the N.J. Governor’s residence, Drumthwacket, where she designed perennial gardens to bloom in a seasonal pallet of color. She was a member of the Princeton Friends Meeting (PFM) at Stonybrook.
In 1995 she moved to Seattle to live near her daughter. A “Celebration of Life” will be held for Elizabeth (Betsy) on Saturday, June 17th at 2pm, Princeton Friends Meeting, Stonybrook, 470 Quaker Road, Princeton, NJ.
