MATAWAN —Four firefighters were injured while fighting a house fire at 4 p.m. on July 10.
The fire occurred at a house that is located at 3 Nawatam Way.
Two of the four injured firefighters were from the Matawan Volunteer Fire Department. One firefighter suffered a possible broken arm and the other experienced smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion, according to Mayor Joseph Altomonte.
The other two firefighters were from the Aberdeen Fire Department. One sustained a burn to his hand and the other experienced smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion, according to Altomonte.
No one was in the house when it caught fire, according to Altomonte.
Seven to eight fire companies from the Borough of Matawan, the Township of Aberdeen and the Township of Middletown responded to the fire and about 50 firefighters were on the scene, according to Altomonte.
Bayshore EMS also responded to the fire and was on the scene, according to Altomonte.
The four injured firefighters were all taken to the hospital and all have been released, according to Altomonte.
The Monmouth County Fire Marshal’s Office is continuing its investigation and has pinpointed the cause of the fire. The office believes that the fire was accidental as of now, according to Altomonte.
“I would describe [the house] as severely damaged and not livable,” Altomonte said.
