Shark Week returns

With summer comes Discovery Channel’s annual Shark Week. This year’s week-long event kicks off on Sunday, July 23 at 7 p.m. ET/PT. As television’s longest running summer event, from exotic, unexplored locations to incredible breaches and shark sonograms, Shark Week has given viewers extensive insight into the mysterious world of sharks – taking them where cameras have never been before. Along the way, Shark Week has built a community of scientists, including Craig O’Connell, Neil Hammerschlag, and Tristan Guttridge, who have come on board to share science-based shark stories and exciting shark research from the field. Discovery will employ new technology, from genetic profiling to miniaturized camera tags, to peer more deeply into the shark ecosystem. The various airings of this 30th anniversary event will combine the best of science and technology to capture the fascinating and misunderstood behavior of sharks. Whether looking for the largest great white sharks deep in the ocean, or exploring for strange new shark species, Shark Week 2017 will deep dive into the secret lives of sharks, and find better ways to share the oceans we co-inhabit.

ABC will premiere its new series Somewhere Between on Monday, July 24 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. This thriller drama stars Paula Patton as Laura Price, a superstar news producer in San Francisco and a fiercely loving mom. She isn’t crazy: Laura knows her 8-year-old daughter is going to be murdered. She doesn’t know who the murderer is, or why she’s killed, but she knows exactly when it will happen, where, and how. Despite this, all of her attempts to keep her daughter safe fail, and Serena’s fixed, unmovable, terrifying fate keeps her directly in the path of her killer. JR Bourne will play Tom Price, Laura’s powerful yet sensitive husband, who is also the city’s district attorney; Devon Sawa as Nico Jackson, a former cop turned private investigator; and newcomer Aria Birch as Serena Price, a big-hearted, untamable child who is always reaching out to others as a new friend.

USA Network will premiere its new series The Sinner on Wednesday, August 2 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Starring and executive produced by Jessica Biel, the series follows a young mother who, when overcome by an inexplicable fit of rage, commits a startling act of violence and to her horror, has no idea why. Detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman) finds himself obsessed with uncovering the woman’s buried motive. Based on Petra Hammesfahr’s book of the same name, the eight-episode crime thriller’s driving force is not the who or the what – but the why.
